Minor Fixture Replacement in Edmonton by Fix & Go Handyman
In short

We replace existing light fixtures, switches, outlets, GFCI outlets and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in Edmonton, like-for-like on the existing wiring and boxes. New circuits, new boxes, panel work, knob-and-tube or aluminium wiring, and anything that needs an electrical permit go to a licensed electrician.

What we replace

  • Light fixtures: ceiling lights, vanity lights, pendants and exterior porch lights, on an existing box that’s rated for the fixture
  • Switches and outlets: swapping worn, broken or almond-coloured devices for new ones, including dimmers
  • GFCI outlets: replacing existing GFCIs in bathrooms, kitchens and outside
  • Smoke and CO detectors: replacing battery and hardwired units with compatible ones
  • Cover plates: the quickest small upgrade there is

The line we don’t cross

Electrical work in Alberta is regulated for good reasons. We only do straight replacements where the wiring, the box and the circuit are already there and in good shape. We don’t:

  • Add new lights, outlets or switches where none existed
  • Run new wire or add circuits
  • Work in your electrical panel
  • Install ceiling fans or heavy fixtures on boxes that aren’t rated for them
  • Touch knob-and-tube or aluminium branch wiring

If we open a box and find scorched wires, no ground where one should be, or anything that looks unsafe, we stop and recommend an electrician. Being honest about this protects you, your insurance and your home.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Most manufacturers recommend replacing them about every 10 years, and the date is usually printed on the back. If your alarms are yellowed or chirping even with a fresh battery, they’re probably due. We replace hardwired units with compatible models (often a simple plug-in harness swap) and can add battery-powered CO alarms near bedrooms if you don’t have them.

Bundling makes sense here

Fixture swaps are quick, so they pair well with other jobs. Changing every dated switch and outlet in a condo, or all the bathroom and hallway lights in a house, is a good half-day job that changes how the place looks.

Questions about minor fixture replacement

Can a handyman replace a light fixture in Alberta?

We stick to like-for-like replacement of an existing fixture on an existing, suitable box. New wiring, new fixture locations, new circuits and panel work need a licensed electrician and often a permit.

Do you install ceiling fans?

Only where there's already a fan-rated box and existing wiring in place. If the box isn't fan-rated, an electrician should replace it.

How often should smoke detectors be replaced?

Most manufacturers say about every 10 years. Check the date on the back of the unit. Test them monthly and replace batteries as recommended.

Can you replace my GFCI outlet?

Yes, if it's replacing an existing GFCI or outlet on existing wiring. A GFCI that keeps tripping may point to a different problem on the circuit, which is one for an electrician.
